Reading Goals FREEBIE!

Hey, hey, hey!  So, I’d love to tell you that I’ve been getting my “summer” on….but Missouri has decided that we are NOT in summer…we are instead is some smashed version of winteralling…that is winter, fall, & spring!  I hope this changes soon!  So, when I am stuck inside I work…#obvi lol!

I wanted to get this post out to you…but I must disclose that I don’t have actual pictures of it in my room because it will be a new addition come the new school year!  I did do writing goals last year which I loved! I just knew that next year I would want to start off running with our reading goals.  Now in K of course there will be some delay…as we are focusing on more what is reading, this is how you hold a book, etc.  When we are ready for goals…I will be ready! 🙂

I have designed reading goal headers we will work on mastering.  I will also list my “idea” behind each goal and then of course in your classroom, you will alter it to fit your needs!

*Visualizing- What do I see in my head while reading?  Does the pictures match what I was thinking?  Does this word look like what I just read?

*Expression- How does my story teller voice sound?  Does my reading sound different if I am reading a statement verses a question?  How does my voice sound if there is an exclamation point at the end?

*Fluency- Am I using my story teller voice?  Does my reading sound smooth?  Do I have a firm understanding of high frequency words? Am I having to stretch out simple CVC words?

*Decoding- Do I “attack” words?  Am I able to look at a word and quickly see the chunks?  Can I read simple CVC words?  Am I applying the phonic skills we’ve learned in class?

*Comprehension-  Do I know what I just read?  Am I able to restate who was in the story and what they were doing? Can I infer problem/solution?

*Tracking {early emergent readers}- Do I tap each word as I read?  Do I know how to return sweep during reading?  Do I know that I start on the left side of the page?

WHOA that was a mouthful!

So, in my classroom I have yet to decide if I will want a “public” display of our reading goals or not. I might possibly just do a teacher note journal, but not sure!  If you’d like to display the goal headers they will be in the freebie download!  You can display these on a bulletin board, chart paper, or do a vertical display with metal ring hooks.

I firmly believe the most important part of kids setting goals is for us to conference with them!  They can easily tell me they want to work on fluency…but do they really know what fluency is?  Next year on every Friday I will not be pulling groups and I will instead pull the students back for some one-on-one reading.  The kids will bring their book tubs back for this time.  The books in their tubs will be books we read during small group.

When they come to my table I will have them choose a book of their choice to read.  We will discuss their goal, they will read, I will record notes about their reading–in regards to their goal, and then we will make an action plan for their independent reading that next week.  Here I will discuss with them what I saw {a positive} and then something they can continue working on.  If needed we can reevaluate their goal and decide on a new one if necessary.
