Free CVCC and R-controlled Pop It cards. Students pop each sound with color-coded blocks, then read and write the word.
These CVCC and R-controlled Pop It cards combine phonics with sensory play for an engaging way to practice decoding. Students use the green, yellow, red fidget pop blocks from Amazon (or any substitute manipulatives) to segment each sound in the word before blending it back together.
Example: barn → /b/ (green), /ar/ (yellow), /n/ (red)
For CVCC words, final blends get two red pops (ex: nest → /n/ green, /e/ yellow, /s/ red, /t/ red)
After popping the sounds, students write the word on the card
Works for small-group phonics, centers, or independent practice
Multisensory format keeps decoding practice hands-on and engaging
This activity builds strong connections between phonemic awareness and phonics while giving students a playful way to rehearse word reading.
